Why Choose Us
A Premier High-Acuity Academic Medical Center
- Training at Jackson Memorial Hospital means caring for one of the most diverse and medically complex patient populations in the country. As the primary safety-net hospital for Miami-Dade County and a major tertiary referral center, residents encounter a wide spectrum of disease processes, socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and healthcare challenges.
- Our residents care for patients across the full continuum of Family Medicine, from preventive outpatient care and chronic disease management to high-acuity inpatient medicine, obstetrics, intensive care, and emergency presentations. This breadth and depth of clinical exposure develops confident, adaptable physicians who are prepared to practice in any setting after graduation.
- The combination of exceptional patient volume, clinical complexity, and diverse pathology provides an unparalleled learning environment and ensures that our graduates are ready to care for any patient, anywhere.

- Class representatives are selected by each class to serve as liaisons between residents and program leadership
- Chief residents are elected by their peers
- Opportunities to serve on the Committee of Residents and Interns (union) and as graduate medical education resident representatives
- Participation in national and state conferences, including American Academy of Family Physicians and Florida Academy of Family Physicians events, with funding opportunities available
- International electives offered in diverse settings—past locations include Haiti, Kenya, Ethiopia, India, and Colombia
Mentorship
Supportive Mentorship and Orientation Programs
Each intern is paired with a faculty advisor and mentor, meeting at least twice a year to support residency development and provide individualized guidance.
Interns are also paired with second year residents to help ease the transition into intern year.
Our orientation prepares incoming interns for their first year and includes resident and faculty mentorship, clinical training at our family medicine clinic, an obstetrics and gynecology mini-workshop, and a comprehensive overview and tour of inpatient rotations. This thoughtful structure helps reduce first-rotation anxiety.
Additionally, a one-week intensive Spanish or Creole language course is offered through our graduate medical education office as part of orientation.
Wellness
Commitment to Resident Wellness
Wellness is an essential part of our residency culture. We offer:
- One individual wellness day per year
- Group wellness mornings, with past activities including bowling, kayaking, boating, escape rooms, yoga/meditation, and beach outings
- A resident-led wellness committee that plans and organizes wellness events
- An annual program retreat to reflect, recharge, and reconnect
