Our graduates are spread roughly evenly across practice types, with 1/3 community, 1/3 academic, and 1/3 fellowships. Although many of our graduates stay to work in South Florida, we have a strong alumni network spread across the country.
Many residents choose to live in South Beach or Brickell, although Miami has a diversity of neighborhoods to fit different lifestyles and budgets. Check out Miami Life for a list of Miami’s neighborhoods.
Residents have advising families composed of up to five residents of different levels and one faculty member. These families meet quarterly in social environments for peer and faculty mentorship and advice. In addition, every resident is paired with a faculty mentor of their choosing for more advanced career planning. At orientation, residents are assigned a “big sibling” for peer mentorship and easier transition.
Each class is also assigned a specific program director or assistant program director who meets with residents semi-annually to provide one-on-one feedback, discuss their progress, and plan their career trajectory.
A diverse and inclusive residency program is critical to providing high-quality care and education. We serve a diverse patient population and want our residents to mirror the diversity of our community.
Miami-Dade County is like no other community in the United States. It has seen a 7 percent population growth since 2010. Our residents’ demographic make-up is 67 percent Hispanic or Latino, 18 percent Black, and 51 percent foreign-born, with more than 70 percent of households speaking a first language other than English.
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Health System aim to be one of the premier academic institutions, leading our nation in diversity and inclusion.
Jackson was named an LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Top Performer in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) 2020 Report, published by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Each of our hospitals was evaluated and received high marks for their policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) patients and their families, as well as employment non-discrimination and cultural competency training for staff.
We foster a supportive community where open communication is encouraged, and mentorship is readily available to guide our residents through both personal and professional challenges. By promoting a culture of well-being and resilience, we ensure that our team is not only equipped to provide exceptional patient care but also to thrive in their careers and personal lives.
