Ultrasound

“Our residents have dedicated ultrasound rotations in first and second year, combined with longitudinal exposure through lectures and clinical shifts with our many fellowship-trained faculty. This allows our residents to master not only basic POCUS applications, but also more advanced skills, and see how to incorporate them into managing their patients.”

Matthew Pyle, MD

Ultrasound Director

Our residents are introduced to ultrasound early, with a dedicated boot camp during orientation and a two-week rotation during PGY-1. This rotation focuses on the basics of ultrasound, and residents gain expertise in knobology and performing the core applications of emergency ultrasound. During the PGY-2 rotation, residents work to enhance their skills in more advanced applications (ocular, musculoskeletal, deep vein thrombosis, etc.) and master the use of point-of-care ultrasonography in the management of critically ill patients with advanced echo techniques, lung ultrasound, and transesophageal echocardiography.

For residents with a keen interest in ultrasound, an elective in advanced ultrasound is also offered, which allows residents to explore their interests and opportunities to collaborate on projects with our other groups (medical education, simulation, global health, etc.).
