Simulation

“Our monthly simulation days allow our faculty to translate the most difficult and unusual cases and turn them into a simulation. It allows our residents to work through complex medical conditions and procedures using the most advanced, state-of-the-art simulation equipment. It is one of our favorite ways to learn and optimize teamwork skills.”

Kelly Medwid M.D.

Simulation Director

Our residency program partners with University of Miami’s School of Nursing and Health Studies in Coral Gables to host monthly simulation didactic days. The University of Miami’s simulation hospital is a four-floor comprehensive simulated hospital that includes operating rooms, wards, clinics, an intensive care unit, and a six-bed emergency department. The facility offers simulation with high-fidelity mannequins and standardized patients, as well as procedural teaching models and ultrasound to improve our residents’ clinical and procedural skills.

During simulation days, small groups of residents care for multiple simulated patients, focusing on high-acuity and life-threatening cases that may not be seen every day in the emergency department. The simulations are followed by a faculty debriefing to allow for reflection and discussion. Procedural training focuses on mastery of skills. The simulation section of our residency program is led by Dr. Kelly Medwid, who was fellowship-trained in simulation education at New York University.
