Program Director’s Welcome

Here at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital, we have a long and proud history of training outstanding geriatric psychiatrists to target the needs of this rapidly growing population. Our graduates count themselves among the best-trained geriatric psychiatrists in the country, and all will agree that they feel more-than-confident entering the workforce with the skills and expertise acquired over the course of our University of Miami/Jackson Health System Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Jackson Memorial Hospital is a large, university-affiliated county hospital and is the perfect sponsor for your geriatric psychiatry training. Here you will help manage a 20-bed geriatric acute-care inpatient unit with a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist. As part of your training, you will help lead second year general psychiatry residents, as well as third-year medical students on their psychiatry clerkship, in a team-based academic environment.

Across the street from Jackson Memorial Hospital, you will also gain experience at the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, with a rich diversity of aging veterans. You will learn from several geriatric psychiatrists’ consultation-liaison work in both the acute care hospital as well as in long-term care settings. You will also take part in a successful outpatient model that imbeds psychiatric care in geriatric medicine primary care clinics.

Our program is intimately involved with the University of Miami’s Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Aging (CNSA), a world-class center focused on state-of-the- art education, research and clinical care in Alzheimer’s disease and related cognitive disorders, as well as other aging issues. The CNSA supports the University of Miami Health System’s, state of Florida-funded, Memory Disorders Clinic. You will gain valuable clinical and research experience within the clinic where I serve as the medical director and as one of your main individual supervisors.

The surroundings in which you train is also an important aspect of selecting a residency program and Miami is a wonderful place to both live and work. Situated in one of the world’s premier destinations, we invite you to come see for yourself why patients, faculty and students from across the country and world are drawn to Miami and the UM/Jackson Health System.
