Our program does not participate in a match program. The final fellowship selections are made among the interviewed candidates by the faculty and/or selection committee.

Program Requirements

Medical Licensing Examination:
All applicants must successfully complete United States Medical Licensing Examination Steps 1, 2 and 3 prior to the start of the program.

Postgraduate Training:
There is postgraduate training required in the form of a successfully completed ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency.

Visas

The J1-Visa: Alien Physician Program, sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, is the standard visa for residents/fellows who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Mission & Vision

The overall goal of the training program is to prepare the fellow to function independently as a forensic psychiatrist. The fellow’s competency will be achieved through supervised clinical experiences and didactic instruction by the faculty, and demonstrated by examinations and proficiency in daily work.

Clinical Experience

Year 1

The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship is a full-time, 12-month program that encompasses didactic and supervised clinical experiences with a Jackson Memorial Hospital county jail diversion and competency restoration psychiatry unit; in a VA Medical Center justice outreach and veterans court; risk-management activities; suicide prevention and University of Miami School of Law clinics.

Opportunities abound for fellow participation in teaching psychiatry residents and medical students. Resources for the fellowship program include Jackson Memorial Hospital, Bruce W. Carter Department of VA Medical Center, the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida and forensic psychiatrists and attorneys affiliated with the University of Miami Department of Psychiatry and School of Law who will engage the fellows in apprenticeship and tutorial activities. Forensic psychiatry fellows will be supported to attend the annual meeting and review course of the American Academic of Psychiatry and the Law. Fellows will also have protected time in order to conduct an academic project involving research, publication or teaching under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
