Program Director’s Welcome
Jackson South Podiatric Medical and Surgical Residency Program is an ACGME-approved via the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), three-year surgical reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery residency-approved program of training which functions within the Jackson Health System. Our program is located at the Jackson South Medical Center in southern Miami-Dade County. The program supports a total of three residents-in-training, one in the first year, one in the second year, and one in the third year.
During training, residents must satisfy requirements set forth by the CPME for minimum numbers of case pathologies and surgical procedures in the foot, rear foot, ankle, and lower leg. These interventions involve wound care, metabolic and developmental diseases, trauma, pediatrics, preventive care, and elective surgical cases. The residency program functions under the direction of a director who’s board-certified in foot and ankle surgery.
In addition, residents are required to rotate through core practices in internal medicine, general surgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, orthopedics, radiology, and emergency medicine. Members of the podiatric and general medical staff participate in training via direct surgical supervision, floor rounding, and journal club.
Our residency program offers a comprehensive and rigorous training experience designed to prepare residents for successful careers in podiatric surgery, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field.

Program Curriculum
Accordion
This is a dedicated podiatric surgical residency program. While internships aren’t normally involved in podiatric medical postgraduate training, there are “core” rotations that take place in general medicine, general surgery, general orthopedics, radiology, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, physical rehabilitation, physical therapy/occupational therapy, and emergency medicine.
First-year responsibilities include inpatient hospital floor responsibilities while also taking first call for the emergency department. Podiatry at Jackson South Medical Center is first call for all lower extremity trauma, which leads to a high volume of forefoot and rearfoot trauma. First-year residents will finish all soft tissue, wound care, and trauma rearfoot numbers by the end of their first year.
Second-year responsibilities include inpatient hospital floor responsibilities, covering for the first-year resident off-call, and second call for the emergency department. Your second year will be spent covering outpatient surgical centers, office/clinic hours, and core rotations. By the end of the second year, residents should have completed all of their surgical numbers, elective and non-elective.
Third-year responsibilities include covering outpatient surgical cases, office/clinic hours, administrative responsibilities for resident education, and elective rotations. Chief resident responsibilities are to oversee junior residents, and ensure smooth and efficient coordination of responsibilities across all three years.
