Program Director’s Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our University of Miami/Jackson Health System Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship. It is my pleasure to share with you many of the outstanding attributes and accomplishments of our program.

Our fellows have an exceptionally strong surgical and clinical experience in orthopedic trauma surgery. Our service covers all trauma of the lower extremities, upper extremities above the wrist, and pelvis and acetabulum. Our team consists of a group of surgeons with a variety of subspecialty interests that cover the full spectrum of techniques and pathologies encountered in orthopedic trauma. The volume of high energy trauma seen at our Level I Ryder Trauma Center/Jackson Memorial is very large and includes a high volume of acetabulum, pelvis and severely injured extremities. This already-large case volume is supplemented by an additional 2,800 polytrauma cases at our affiliated Level II trauma center at Jackson South Medical Center. In addition, we treat a large number of post-traumatic problems such as malunion, nonunion and osteomyelitis that come not only from the United States, but also in large numbers from the Caribbean, as well as South and Central America.

In our experience, and to the best of our knoweldge, together this gives our fellowship the largest volume of trauma care at any institution in the United States. Additionally with only one fellowship spot offered, this gives the fellow a tremendous opportunity, on a daily basis, to choose the highest quality learning opportunities to suit their educational needs.

In addition to the outstanding surgical and clinical experiences gained, we are happy to offer our fellows many research opportunities and resources. We were one of the group, we have been part of many groundbreaking studies including the largest prospective study ever in orthopedic surgery. Together with our two research coordinators, we continue to be actively involved with many large prospective studies through the group. We have a strong and productive biomechanics lab with a very long and successful record of scientific discovery, innovation and publication. In addition, we have many ongoing clinical and basic science studies within the orthopedic trauma division.

The robust educational program is comprised of multiple activities and components. The orthopedic trauma team holds daily morning X-ray and case review rounds. The fellow also attends weekly grand rounds with speakers from around the country and the world. In addition, there is an educational lecture series and journal club sessions that the fellow attends and sometimes coordinates. The year also includes a number of other activities such as saw bones exercises and cadaveric dissection through both our own medical school and through the many courses that industry and various societies conduct here in Miami. In tandem, we encourage our fellows to attend the many courses, conferences and learning opportunities outside of the institution during their year of fellowship training.
