Clinical Experience

Overview

As an integral part of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program pursues three interrelated areas: education, research and treatment.

The fellowship is an ACGME-accredited multidisciplinary sleep medicine training program consisting of bariatric surgery; pulmonary; neurology; otolaryngology; psychiatry and sleep psychology faculty. The one-year fellowship consists of up to four sleep medicine fellows with backgrounds in anesthesiology; internal medicine; psychiatry; pulmonary, neurology and surgery.

At the UHealth Sleep Center, which is located at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the education of our fellows is regarded as a top priority. In addition to the UHealth Sleep Center, there is the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center sleep center site, located adjacent to the medical school campus.

Education

The education of our fellows involves case discussions; monthly journal club (conducted by sleep medicine fellows); the University of Miami Sleep Conference; weekly lecture series (given by attending physicians and covering various sleep medicine topics); yearly presentations at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies Annual SLEEP Meeting and the yearly UHealth Sleep Symposium.

Rotations

Each rotation lasts one month. Additionally, there are opportunities to do electives outside of the core rotations listed below.

Bruce W. Carter Department of VA Medical Center Rotation: Fellow reviews polysomnography study reports with various attending physicians at the VA Medical Center. The fellow attends a weekly full-day clinic and is also responsible for conducting a telemedicine/telehealth clinic from the VA Medical Center with the surrounding community-based outpatient centers in Florida, serving veterans from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West.
University of Miami Sleep Center Rotation: Fellow works on a one-to-one basis with various attending physicians examining patients.
