Clinical Experience
Year 1
Our one-year training program involves competency-based educational activities encompassing experiential learning in various clinical settings to structured didactics in the classroom.
Weekly didactic activity is structured throughout the year and is strictly protected from clinical activities. The immersion course relevant to HPM clinical practice such as pain and symptom management, communication skills and prognostication, is scheduled within the first two months of training, followed by weekly didactics.
Fellows participate and learn during didactic activities by presenting notable cases and reviewing and analyzing articles or topics. A faculty-led board review question/answer session is scheduled every other week to prepare for board examination. The weekly lecture series includes various topics relevant to HPM and/or related fields, presented by faculty or by invited guest lecturers/experts.
Representative didactic activities are as follows:
Week 1 –
Director Meeting; Case Presentation; Article Review and PC Lecture
Week 2 –
Scholarly Activities; Case Presentation; Board Review and PC Lecture
Week 3 –
Case Presentation; Book Chapter and PC Lecture
Week 4 –
Scholarly Activities; Case Presentation; Board Review & PC Lecture
There are many elective options including geriatric medicine, many site disease groups in hematology and oncology, radiation oncology, pain medicine/interventional pain service, heart failure clinic/heart transplant program, infectious disease and HIV medicine, pulmonary/critical care medicine, GI/hepatology, nephrology, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, medical marijuana and wound care. Each fellow has one four-week block of elective rotation. Fellows are allowed to select options to meet their educational needs and to attend more than one option during the block.
Each fellow is assigned to a faculty mentor to guide professional development and to discuss other matters that fellows may need help with. Fellows will have plenty of opportunities to improve their teaching skills. All participating institutions have trainees of various levels and backgrounds and fellows participate in small- group teaching, bedside teaching, giving lectures or didactics and in-service.
Fellows will learn to conduct a domain-based, comprehensive, whole-person assessment and to provide goal-directed, individualized treatment and care plan recommendations. Fellows will also have one hour of protected time every other week to conduct scholarly activities such as quality improvement projects, patient safety projects or research activities.
