Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship

Mission & Vision

Our mission at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship Program is to train laboratory fellows to be competent, independently-practicing laboratory directors in clinical cytogenetics and molecular genetics. Our program is competitive in securing fellowship training that exposes trainees to state-of-the-art diagnostic and research techniques and supports our fellows in their scholarly activities.

We are here to teach fellows to be effective educators, provide them with the tools to be effective members and leaders of healthcare teams and to facilitate fellows in developing skills for lifelong learning.

Program Director’s Welcome

Program Director’s Welcome

We appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to showing you what makes us extremely proud of the University of Miami/Jackson Health System Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship Program.

With outstanding training opportunities at our diagnostic biochemical/molecular genetics and cytogenetic laboratories, our program offers integrated cytogenetics and molecular genetics training for both germline and somatic genetic/genomic variations. Trainees get to regularly interact with our clinical geneticists and referring physicians, as well as rotate through our various clinics which provide care to patients of all ages.

Our centers of excellence truly offer fellows a unique perspective on LGG: The Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics/John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics is an internationally renowned center for outstanding research on the genetics and genomics of rare and common disorders; the Biochemical and Molecular Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory located at the Department of Human Genetics offers germline testing for a variety of genetic disorders and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides a comprehensive diagnostic service including cytogenetics and cancer genetics/genomics testing for the UM/Jackson Health System.

Clinical Experience

Overview

The Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship Program provides comprehensive training that meets the requirements of the ABMGG for a Laboratory Genetics and Genomics certification. The fellow will obtain competence in the application of clinical molecular and cytogenetics to medical practice and relevant research experience through a two-year fellowship training program.

As a fellow, you will be expected to possess the attitude, knowledge and skills required for directing the operation of a clinical diagnostic genetics laboratory; providing accurate and timely diagnosis and appropriate interpretations for a wide range of genetic abnormalities and efficiently and effectively communicating laboratory results and interpretations as a consultant to referring clinicians.

Academic (didactics, journal club, metabolic rounds and post-clinic rounds) lectures occur on Thursday mornings. The department also enjoys a very active visiting professor lecture program, with many prominent speakers featured throughout the year.

Year 1

Your first year of training is devoted to laboratory experience which includes cancer testing (fluorescence in situ hybridization, karyotype, PCR and sequencing); clinical rotation and constitutional and germline testing (FISH, genotyping, karyotype, microarray, mutation testing and next-generation sequencing).

Year 2

The curriculum for your second year will focus on a specific area of concentration, cancer testing (FISH, karyotype, PCR and sequencing), and a rotation in the Biochemical and Molecular Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory.
